In energy engineering applications, it is important to characterize
particle and droplet morphology. The emission of particle matter
from a furnace needs to be recorded for different operation and
fuel parameters so that the impact of the combustion process inside
the furnace can be assessed. In many combustion and gasification
processes, different forms of spray system occur frequently. The
size distribution of the droplet in the spray often determines the
efficient of the process.
ETC has very advanced instruments for particle and droplet characterization.
The particles' mass size distribution can be analysed with a low
pressure impactor that size separates particles according to their
aerodynamic diameter in 13 stages from 0.03-10.7 microns. The particle
concentration in the flue gas can also be analysed with an absolute
filter.
Droplets and sprays are analysed with a very advanced laser method,
PDA (Phase Doppler Anemometry). The velocity and the diameter of
the droplets are measured with high accuracy. The system can also
be used for measurements of the velocity for solid particles in
suspension with air or water.
