Courses at ETC

ETC can offer a variety of courses that will be designed according to the costumer’s needs. The courses can be given in the following areas:

  • CFD calculations: Introduction or advanced
  • Emission measurements
  • Energy efficiency

An example of a course that can be given at ETC is described bellow:

Course in practical combustion technology

ETC offers a two-day intensive course in practical combustion technology. The course includes four practical elements that are described bellow. There is a short theoretical introduction before each element. The participants are divided in small groups to be guided by ETC’s staff. The practical elements will be done on the available research facilities which are provided with a complete set of instruments for measuring the test parameters, temperatures, power and the emissions.

Who will participate?

Technicians and boiler-operating staff
Ventilation and Sanitation staff

Lectures
1. Introduction to combustion technology
2. Particle measurement in biofuel combustion. Theoretical background
3. Biofuel processing (peletization, Briquette-pressing)
3. Examination of small scale combustion devices.

Practical elements

Single Particle Reactivity Test (SPRT): The SPRT is developed by Åbo Academy and is done in an oven with controlled oxygen content. A pellet in a small basket is released in the oven and filmed during the combustion process. The time needed for drying, pyrolysis and char-combustion is documented. Wood-pellets is to be used as a reference for solid fuels.

Simulation of grate boiler: A grate oven is used to study the combustion process in a grate boiler. The oven is 1,8 m long and 1,2 m in width and is equipped with inclined roof. The height of the roof is between 60 and 80 cm. The sides and the roof of the oven is insulated by ceramic blocks. The fuel feeding rate is regulated by the velocity of the screw feeder and the height of the fuel-bed is set by the velocity of the steel-made conveying belt. The velocity of the feeder and conveyer are regulated by Variable Frequency Drives (VFD). Combustion air can be supplied by primary and secondary inlets. Thermocouples are mounted in several positions in the oven and in flue-gas channel. The flue-gas channel is equipped by a probe to withdraw a stream for measurement of the gaseous and particle emissions.

Commercial 30-kW house boiler: Tests will be made on a commercial house boiler equipped with a pellets burner. The power input and output, water and gas flow, emissions and other parameters will be registered and analysed. The participants will get idea about the effect of the different parameters on the emissions and how a boiler can be adjusted for best operation.

Wood stove: A 10 kW wood stove will be studied. The efficiency of the stove and the different will be calculated emissions will be measured

Cost: 10 500 SEK/participant
